If you're traveling in Korea, you may wonder:
Do I really need to carry my passport everywhere?
The short answer is yes, it is safest to carry it with you.
Under Korea’s Immigration Act, foreigners staying in Korea are required to carry a passport or another accepted identification document. Foreigners under 17 are exempt.
That sounds strict, but for most travelers, the practical reason is simple: there are situations where you may actually need the original passport.
When You May Need Your Passport
The most common situation is tax refund shopping.
At participating stores, you may need to show your passport when asking for an immediate tax refund. Passport verification is part of the process.
You may also need your passport for things such as:
- Hotel or accommodation check-in
- Certain ticket or reservation checks
- Age verification in some situations
- Airport procedures
- Tax refund procedures
So even if you do not use it every day, it is useful to have it with you.
Is a Photo of Your Passport Enough?
A photo on your phone is useful as a backup.
But it is not the same as carrying the original passport.
If an official asks to see your identification, Korean law refers to the actual passport or another accepted identification document.
I would still keep a clear photo of your passport on your phone in case of loss or emergency.
Just do not treat the photo as a complete replacement for the original.
What About Tax Refund Shopping?
This is where many travelers actually use their passport.
For an immediate tax refund at participating stores, passport verification is required. For downtown refund services, you may also need your passport, refund voucher, and credit card.
So if you are planning a shopping day in places like Myeongdong, Hongdae, Gangnam, or a department store, carrying your passport can save you an unnecessary trip back to the hotel.

What If You're Worried About Losing It?
That is a reasonable concern.
I would not carry your passport loosely in a jacket pocket or leave it in an easy-to-open outer pocket of your bag.
A better option is:
- Keep it in a zipped inner pocket
- Use a slim passport pouch
- Keep a photo or scan separately on your phone
- Avoid taking it out unless you actually need it
Korea is generally convenient for travelers, but losing your passport can create a much bigger problem than carrying it carefully.

Can You Leave It in the Hotel Safe?
Many travelers do.
But if you leave your passport at the hotel, you may run into a situation where you need the original unexpectedly.
For example, you may find a tax refund store while shopping and realize your passport is back at the hotel.
So for a normal sightseeing or shopping day, I would usually carry it securely rather than leave it behind.
The Simple Answer
For most foreign travelers in Korea:
Carry your original passport with you, keep it somewhere secure, and also keep a photo or digital copy as backup.
You probably will not need to show it often.
But when you do need it, having the original with you is much easier than going back to your hotel.
