eSIM, SIM or Pocket WiFi in Korea? What I’d Choose in 2026

If you're coming to Korea, you’ll probably need to decide this before your trip:

eSIM, SIM card, or Pocket WiFi?

These days, most travelers seem to choose eSIM first.

And honestly, if you're traveling alone, I think that usually makes sense.

But eSIM is not always the best choice for everyone.

If you're traveling with family or friends, Pocket WiFi can still be surprisingly useful.

If You're Traveling Alone, I’d Choose eSIM

For a solo trip, eSIM is probably the easiest option.

You can buy it before arriving in Korea, install it on your phone, and start using data once you land.

There’s no extra device to carry, no SIM card to swap, and nothing to return before flying home.

For most solo travelers, that convenience is hard to beat.

The only thing I would check before buying one is whether your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.

If eSIM sounds like the easiest option for your trip, you can compare available Korea eSIM plans here.

When a Physical SIM Makes More Sense

A physical SIM is worth considering if you want a Korean phone number, not just mobile data.

Most travelers can get around Korea perfectly well with data only.

You can use maps, translation apps, messaging, hotel bookings, and most travel apps without a Korean number.

But there are still some situations where a local number can be useful.

So if having a Korean phone number matters to you, I would look at a prepaid SIM instead of a data-only eSIM.

If you're wondering whether you actually need a Korean phone number, I explained that in more detail here.

What About Pocket WiFi?

Pocket WiFi is basically a small portable WiFi router that you carry with you.

One device can connect several phones at the same time.

That means it can make sense if you're traveling as a couple, with friends, or as a family.

For example, instead of buying separate data plans for three people, everyone can connect to one Pocket WiFi device.

KT currently offers WiFi Router rental for foreign visitors, including pickup at Incheon Airport.

If Pocket WiFi sounds better for your group, you can check current rental options and airport pickup availability here.

When I Would Choose Pocket WiFi

I would consider Pocket WiFi if:

  • You are traveling with two or more people
  • Someone in your group cannot use eSIM
  • You want to share one data connection
  • You do not need a Korean phone number

There are a few downsides too.

You need to keep the router charged, everyone has to stay reasonably close to it, and you need to return the device before leaving Korea.

That is why I probably would not choose it for a solo trip.

But for a family or group traveling together all day, it can still be a practical option.

Can You Just Use Free WiFi in Korea?

You will find free WiFi in many places in Korea.

Airports, hotels, cafés, subway stations, and other public places often have it.

But I would not plan an entire trip around free WiFi.

The moment you are outside looking for a restaurant, checking directions, translating something, or trying to book a ride, having your own data connection becomes much more convenient.

My Simple Choice

If I had to keep it simple:

Traveling alone → eSIM

Need a Korean phone number → SIM card

Traveling with family or friends → Pocket WiFi is worth checking

There is no single best option.

The better choice depends on how many people are traveling together and whether you need a Korean phone number.

For most solo travelers, I would keep it simple and use eSIM.

But if three or four people are staying together throughout the trip, I would definitely compare the price of Pocket WiFi before buying separate data plans for everyone.
