Google Maps in Korea: What Works, What Doesn’t, and What to Use Instead (2026)

Does Google Maps Work in Korea? What Tourists Should Use Instead (2026)

If you normally use Google Maps everywhere you travel, Korea can be a little confusing.

You can search for places, check photos, read reviews, and find major landmarks on Google Maps in Korea.

But when you actually need to walk somewhere, find the best subway exit, or get accurate local navigation, Google Maps may not work the way you expect.

That is why I recommend installing at least one Korean map app before your trip.

For most visitors, NAVER Map is the easiest place to start.

In this guide, I’ll explain what Google Maps can and cannot do in Korea in 2026, when NAVER Map or KakaoMap is better, and how I would actually use these apps when traveling around Seoul.

1. Does Google Maps Work in Korea?

Yes — but not in the same way it works in many other countries.

Google Maps is still useful for:

• Searching for major attractions

• Saving places before your trip

• Checking photos and reviews

• Sharing locations

• Getting a general idea of where something is

The problem begins when you need detailed navigation.

Walking directions can be limited or unavailable, driving navigation is still restricted, and local business information may not always be as complete or current as Korea’s domestic map services.

So I would not arrive in Korea with Google Maps as my only navigation app.

2. Why Is Google Maps Limited in Korea?

For many years, South Korea restricted the export of detailed map data because of national security concerns.

In February 2026, the Korean government conditionally approved Google’s request to use more detailed map data.

That sounds like Google Maps should suddenly work normally in Korea, but the change has not been fully reflected in the app yet.

As of 2026, travelers can still encounter limited walking and driving directions.

So if you see recent news saying that Google Maps restrictions in Korea have changed, that does not necessarily mean full Google-style navigation is already available on your phone.

For an actual trip today, I would still plan around NAVER Map or KakaoMap.

3. NAVER Map: My First Choice for Most Foreign Visitors

If a friend visiting Korea asked me to recommend just one navigation app, I would start with NAVER Map.

If you are still deciding which apps to install before your trip, check my Essential Apps for Traveling in Korea in 2026 guide.

NAVER Map supports Korean, English, Japanese, and Chinese, and it is designed around local Korean information.

It is especially useful for:

• Walking directions

• Subway and bus routes

• Real-time public transportation information

• Finding the correct subway exit

• Restaurant and café information

• Local reviews and photos

• Business hours and location details

NAVER has also been improving the app specifically for international visitors.

In 2026, foreign visitors can use passport verification for some NAVER services, making it easier to access reservations, orders, and payments without a Korean mobile phone number.

Local Tip

One thing that saves a surprising amount of time in Seoul is checking the subway exit number before you leave the station.

Large stations can have many exits, and choosing the wrong one can add a long walk to what looked like a very short route.

This is one reason I prefer a Korean map app for everyday navigation.

4. What About KakaoMap?

KakaoMap is also an excellent option.

It provides walking, driving, cycling, and public transportation routes and uses frequently updated local information.

For someone already familiar with Kakao services, it can feel very convenient.

KakaoMap can also show:

• Bus and subway routes

• Walking directions

• Driving navigation

• Nearby restaurants and attractions

• Public transportation boarding and arrival information

For most short-term foreign visitors, I would still recommend trying NAVER Map first because its multilingual travel support has improved significantly.

But if you prefer KakaoMap’s interface or cannot find a place easily in NAVER Map, having both apps installed is useful.

5. When Should You Still Use Google Maps?

I would not delete Google Maps.

It still has a useful role during a Korea trip.

Personally, I would use Google Maps mainly for:

• Saving places while planning my trip

• Checking international traveler reviews

• Looking at photos before visiting

• Sharing a location with friends

• Finding famous attractions

Then, when it is time to actually travel there, I would open NAVER Map or KakaoMap.

Think of it this way:

Google Maps = planning and discovery

NAVER Map or KakaoMap = actual navigation in Korea

You do not have to choose only one.

6. My Practical Setup for a Korea Trip

If I were visiting Korea for the first time, I would set up my phone like this before the flight:

1. Keep Google Maps installed

Use it for saved places, reviews, and general trip planning.

2. Install NAVER Map

Use this as your main navigation app for walking, subway, bus, and local place information.

If you are worried about getting around Seoul late at night, my Missed the Last Subway in Seoul? 2026 Guide may also help.

3. Install KakaoMap as a backup

It is useful when you want a second route option or cannot find something easily in NAVER Map.

4. Save your hotel in both Google Maps and NAVER Map

If you are planning your first trip into Seoul, see my Incheon Airport to Seoul guide for the easiest options.

Do this before arriving in Korea.

If you are tired after a long flight or your mobile connection is unstable, having your hotel already saved makes the first trip much easier.

5. Keep the Korean address of your hotel

Some small businesses and accommodations are easier to find using their Korean name or Korean address.

If an English search does not work, copy the Korean address from your hotel booking and paste it into NAVER Map.

A Realistic Example

Imagine you are staying in Myeongdong and want to visit a small café in Seongsu.

Google Maps may help you find the café and show you photos from international travelers.

But when you leave the subway station, NAVER Map is usually more useful for telling you:

• Which subway exit to use

• Which street to walk down

• How long the walk will take

• Whether there is a bus option

• The café’s local listing and recent reviews

That is the difference that matters when you are actually standing on a street in Seoul.

7. Which Map App Should You Use in Korea?

My recommendation is simple.

For most foreign visitors:

NAVER Map = main navigation app

KakaoMap = useful backup

Google Maps = planning, reviews, saved places, and general reference

You do not need to stop using Google Maps completely.

Just do not rely on it as your only navigation tool in Korea.

Final Thoughts

Google Maps does work in Korea, but it is still not the app I would trust for every part of a trip.

If you are visiting Seoul, Busan, or other parts of Korea in 2026, install NAVER Map before you arrive.

Keep Google Maps for planning and saved places, and use NAVER Map or KakaoMap when you actually need to get somewhere.

It is a small setup change, but it can save you a lot of frustration once you are in Korea.

If you are coming to Korea soon, which map app are you planning to use? If there is a Korean app or travel tool you are unsure about, leave a comment and I may cover it in a future guide.
