Quick Answer
Suwon is one of the easiest day trips from Seoul.
The simplest route is usually Seoul → Suwon Station → Hwaseong Haenggung → Hwaseong Fortress → Haenggung-dong → back to Seoul.
You can easily do it in one day without rushing too much.
How to Get from Seoul to Suwon
For most travelers, Subway Line 1 to Suwon Station is the easiest option.
Depending on where you start in Seoul, it usually takes around an hour.
You can also take a regular train from Seoul Station or Yongsan Station, but the subway is often simpler because you do not need to book in advance.
Once you arrive at Suwon Station, I recommend taking a local bus or taxi to Hwaseong Haenggung Palace rather than walking all the way.

Start at Hwaseong Haenggung Palace
Hwaseong Haenggung is a good place to start because it is right next to the main fortress area.
It was used by King Jeongjo during his visits to Suwon, and it is one of the main historic sites in the city.
The palace is usually open from 09:00 to 18:00.
In 2026, night opening is also available on selected Fridays, weekends, and public holidays during the season, so staying a little later can be worth it.
Walk Around Hwaseong Fortress
After the palace, continue to Hwaseong Fortress.
You do not need to walk the entire wall.
For a day trip, it is easier to explore the sections around Haenggung, Janganmun Gate, and the nearby old streets.
That gives you the main atmosphere without spending the whole day walking.
Lunch and Haenggung-dong
After the fortress, head into Haenggung-dong.
There are plenty of cafés, restaurants, and small shops around this area.
It is a good place to have lunch, take a break, and spend some time before heading back to Seoul.
If you stay until early evening, the fortress area also feels different once the lights start coming on.
If you prefer not to plan the transportation yourself, there are also full-day Suwon tour from Seoul that include Hwaseong Fortress and the surrounding area.
Should You Stay Overnight?
For most travelers, Suwon works perfectly well as a day trip.
But staying one night can make sense if you want to see more of the night view or explore the area slowly.
If you stay overnight, Suwon Station is convenient for transportation, while Haenggung-dong is better if you want to stay closer to the historic area.
If you want to stay near the historic area, Yoonstay Haenggun is one option within walking distance of Hwaseong Haenggung Palace.
