Korea Transportation Card Guide 2026: T-money vs Climate Card vs WOWPASS
Choosing the right transportation card can make traveling in Korea much easier.
For most first-time visitors, the three options worth knowing are:
- T-money
- Climate Card short-term passes
- WOWPASS
Each one works differently, so the best choice depends on where you are traveling, how often you will use public transportation, and whether you also want a payment card.
My Local Take
For most first-time visitors traveling around multiple parts of Korea, T-money is still the simplest all-purpose choice.
If you are staying mainly in Seoul and expect to use buses and subways many times each day, a Climate Card short-term pass may offer better value.
WOWPASS is more useful for travelers who want one card for both transportation and prepaid shopping payments, but it is not necessary for everyone.
Here is a simple 2026 comparison for tourists.
1. T-money: The Simple All-Purpose Transportation Card
T-money is the most familiar transportation card for visitors to Korea.
It can be used on:
- Subways
- City buses
- Many taxis
- Some convenience store purchases
T-money cards are sold at convenience stores and transportation-related sales locations.
They are especially useful if you plan to travel both inside and outside Seoul.
For most first-time visitors who want a simple transportation card without extra features, T-money remains one of the easiest choices.
The main trade-off is that T-money is pay-as-you-go, so frequent riders in Seoul may spend more than they would with an unlimited short-term pass.
Best for:
- First-time visitors
- Travelers visiting several Korean cities
- Travelers who do not need an unlimited Seoul pass
2. Climate Card: Best for Heavy Public Transportation Use in Seoul
The Climate Card is Seoul's unlimited public transportation pass.
For short-term visitors, tourist passes are available in:
- 1-day
- 2-day
- 3-day
- 5-day
- 7-day options
Current short-term pass prices are:
- 1 day: KRW 5,000
- 2 days: KRW 8,000
- 3 days: KRW 10,000
- 5 days: KRW 15,000
- 7 days: KRW 20,000
The physical Climate Card itself costs KRW 3,000.
The pass can be useful if you expect to use Seoul's subway and buses frequently during a short stay.
However, coverage is not identical to T-money.
Some services and lines, including the Shinbundang Line and GTX, are outside the standard Climate Card service area.
Important 2026 Update
Seoul is changing its long-term transportation pass system.
The old 30-day prepaid Climate Card is being phased out as Seoul transitions to the new Climate Pass system for residents.
This change mainly affects residents and long-term users.
Short-term Climate Card passes for tourists — 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 days — will continue to be available.
This distinction is important because tourists may still see information online about the older 30-day Climate Card.
3. International Credit Cards Can Now Be Used at Selected Machines
A major change in 2026 made the Climate Card more convenient for international visitors.
Since March 17, 2026, internationally issued credit and debit cards such as Visa and Mastercard can be used at 440 new transportation card vending machines installed at 273 Seoul subway stations on Lines 1–8.
These machines allow foreign visitors to purchase or recharge:
- Climate Card short-term passes
- Single-journey subway tickets
An international-card transaction may include an average service fee of approximately 3.7%.
This does not mean that foreign credit cards can simply be tapped at every subway gate.
The international card is being used to purchase or recharge the transit product at a compatible vending machine.
4. WOWPASS: Transportation Plus Payment
WOWPASS is different from a normal transportation card.
It combines:
- A prepaid payment card
- Foreign currency exchange features
- T-money transportation functionality
The built-in T-money feature can be used on subways, buses, and other public transportation.
WOWPASS can also be used for purchases at Korean merchants that accept local credit or debit cards.
The card can be managed through the WOWPASS app, where travelers can check balances and manage the card.
One important detail:
The WOWPASS payment balance and the T-money transportation balance are separate.
You need to manage the transportation balance separately from the normal WOWPASS spending balance.
The main trade-off is that WOWPASS adds more features, but it is also more complex than simply using a regular T-money card.
Best for:
- Travelers who want one card for transportation and shopping
- Travelers whose international cards sometimes fail in Korea
- Travelers who want app-based balance management
5. T-money vs Climate Card vs WOWPASS
T-money
Best for:
Flexible transportation throughout Korea
Advantages:
- Simple
- Widely accepted
- Useful outside Seoul
- Easy for most tourists to understand
Consider it if:
You want a straightforward transportation card.
Climate Card Short-Term Pass
Best for:
Visitors using public transportation frequently in Seoul
Advantages:
- Unlimited eligible transportation during the pass period
- 1-, 2-, 3-, 5-, and 7-day options
- International card payment available at selected new vending machines
Consider it if:
You will make many subway and bus trips in Seoul each day.
WOWPASS
Best for:
Tourists who want transportation plus a prepaid payment card
Advantages:
- Built-in T-money function
- Can also be used for shopping
- App balance management
- Foreign currency and international-card top-up options available
Consider it if:
You want one travel card that handles more than transportation.
Skip it if you only need transportation and already have an international card that works reliably in Korea.
6. Which Card Should a First-Time Visitor Choose?
For many first-time visitors:
Choose T-money if:
- You want the simplest option
- You will travel outside Seoul
- You are not sure how many subway trips you will take
Choose a Climate Card short-term pass if:
- Most of your trip is in Seoul
- You expect to ride public transportation frequently
- You want predictable transportation costs
Choose WOWPASS if:
- You want a transportation card and prepaid shopping card together
- You want to manage your travel spending through an app
- You prefer an all-in-one tourist card
7. Can You Use More Than One Card?
Yes.
You do not have to choose only one card for your entire trip.
For example:
A traveler could use a Climate Card during several busy sightseeing days in Seoul and use T-money for trips outside the Climate Card service area.
Another traveler might use WOWPASS for shopping and use its built-in T-money function for transportation.
Choose based on your actual itinerary instead of assuming one card is always best.
Final Tip
For most tourists, there is no universal "best" transportation card.
T-money is the easiest general-purpose option.
The Climate Card can provide good value for travelers making many eligible trips in Seoul.
WOWPASS can be convenient if you also want a prepaid payment card for shopping.
Before buying a pass, check:
- How many days you will stay
- Whether you will travel outside Seoul
- How often you expect to use buses and subways
- Whether you also need a payment card
