If you are visiting Korea for the first time, getting a T-money card is one of the easiest ways to make transportation simple from day one.
A T-money card is a rechargeable transportation card that can be used on subways, buses, many taxis, and at participating stores across Korea.
Here is what first-time visitors need to know.
My Local Take
For most first-time visitors, I recommend getting a T-money card soon after arriving in Korea.
It is simple, widely accepted, and removes the hassle of buying a separate subway or bus ticket every time.
You do not need to load a large amount at once. Start with a reasonable balance, use it for a day or two, and top it up when needed.
1. What Is a T-money Card?
T-money is a prepaid transportation card widely used throughout Korea.
Instead of buying a separate ticket every time you travel, simply load money onto the card and tap it when using public transportation.
You can use T-money for:
- Subways
- City buses
- Many taxis
- Airport and express buses that accept T-money
- Selected convenience stores, cafés, and other T-money merchants
For most first-time travelers, a regular T-money card is one of the simplest and most flexible options.
2. Where Can You Buy a T-money Card?
T-money cards are easy to find after arriving in Korea.
Common places include:
- CU
- GS25
- 7-ELEVEN
- Emart24
- Subway station vending machines
- Other locations displaying the T-money logo
A basic T-money card usually costs around 3,000–5,000 won, although special designs may cost more.
The card price does not include transportation credit, so you need to load money onto the card after purchasing it.
3. How Much Money Should You Load?
You do not need to load a large amount at once.
For a typical 3-night, 4-day trip, starting with around 30,000–40,000 won is a practical amount.
If the balance gets low, you can simply add more later.
T-money can be recharged at:
- Convenience stores
- Subway station recharge machines
Some subway machines may require cash, so carrying a small amount of Korean won is useful.
My Local Tip
Don’t load too much money at once. For most short trips, it is easier to start with a moderate balance and top up when needed, especially if you are not sure how often you will use taxis, buses, or subways.
4. How to Use T-money on the Subway
Using T-money on the subway is very simple.
When entering the station:
Tap your card on the reader at the ticket gate.
When leaving the station:
Tap the same card again at the exit gate.
The correct fare is calculated automatically.
Always use the same card for both entry and exit.
5. How to Use T-money on Buses
When boarding a bus:
Tap your card on the reader near the entrance.
Before getting off:
Tap the card again on the reader near the exit.
Do not forget the second tap.
It is especially important if you plan to transfer to another bus or subway, because transfer discounts depend on your trip being recorded correctly.
6. How Transfers Work
One of the biggest advantages of T-money is the public transportation transfer system.
When transferring between eligible buses and subways within the allowed transfer period, you may receive a transfer discount instead of paying a completely new base fare.
In Seoul, the usual transfer window is within 30 minutes after tapping out. From 9 PM to 7 AM, the transfer window is extended to 60 minutes.
The transfer discount does not normally apply if you board the same bus or the same route again.
For visitors, the easiest rule to remember is:
Always tap when entering and leaving.
This is especially important on buses.
7. Can You Use T-money Outside Seoul?
Yes.
T-money can be used on public transportation in many cities and regions across Korea.
That makes it useful if your trip includes destinations outside Seoul, such as Busan or other major cities.
Acceptance can vary for some local or specialized transportation services, so check locally when traveling in smaller regions.
8. Can You Use T-money in Taxis?
Many taxis accept T-money.
If the taxi has a compatible card terminal, you can usually pay the fare using your T-money balance.
However, it is still smart to carry another payment method in case a specific taxi cannot accept it.
9. Can You Use T-money at Convenience Stores?
Yes.
T-money can also be used for purchases at many participating convenience stores, cafés, and other merchants displaying the T-money logo.
This can be useful near the end of your trip if you have a small amount of money left on the card.
10. What Happens to the Remaining Balance?
Remaining T-money balance can usually be refunded at eligible locations.
For smaller remaining balances, refunds are available at participating convenience stores and other eligible locations.
If your remaining balance is over 50,000 won, the refund must be processed at Tmoney Town near Seoul Station Exit 10.
Important points:
- Only the remaining stored balance is refundable.
- The original price of the card itself is normally not refunded.
- A small refund service fee may apply.
- If only a small balance remains, using it at a participating convenience store may be easier.
Try not to load a large amount shortly before leaving Korea.
Common T-money Mistakes to Avoid
Forgetting to tap when getting off a bus
Always tap when boarding and getting off.
Missing the exit tap can affect transfer discounts and may result in additional charges later.
Trying to use one card for everyone
For normal public transportation use, each traveler should have their own transportation card if they want transfers and fares to be calculated correctly.
Loading too much money at once
You can recharge easily, so there is usually no reason to keep a very large balance on the card.
T-money vs. TMONEY TRAVEL CARD
International visitors may also see the TMONEY TRAVEL CARD.
It works for nationwide public transportation and also provides benefits at selected tourism, shopping, and cultural partners.
The regular T-money card is still a simple choice if you mainly need transportation.
If you also want tourist discounts and partner benefits, the TMONEY TRAVEL CARD may be worth comparing.
Note: The older KOREA TOUR CARD is no longer sold.
T-money vs. Climate Card
If you are staying mainly in Seoul and expect to use public transportation very frequently, you may also want to compare the Climate Card short-term pass.
Short-term passes are available for:
- 1 day
- 2 days
- 3 days
- 5 days
- 7 days
These passes are designed for frequent travel within the eligible Seoul transportation area.
However, they do not cover every transportation service or every route outside Seoul.
For travelers visiting multiple regions or following a flexible itinerary, regular T-money is usually the easier option.
Important update for 2026: Seoul is phasing out the old 30-day Climate Card system as it transitions to the new Climate Pass program.
However, Climate Card short-term passes for tourists — 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 days — will continue to be available.
Quick T-money Checklist
Before your first ride:
- Buy a T-money card
- Load around 30,000–40,000 won for a typical short trip
- Keep a small amount of cash available for recharging
- Tap when entering and exiting
- Tap both when boarding and leaving a bus
- Check your balance occasionally
- Avoid loading too much near the end of your trip
Final Tip
If you are unsure which transportation card to choose, a regular T-money card is a safe and flexible starting point.
Buy it after arriving in Korea, add some credit, and recharge whenever necessary.
Once you understand the basic tap-in and tap-out system, getting around Korea becomes much easier.
